Intro to Theatre of the Oppressed

Tap into the wisdom of the body! The language of movement, physical expression, gesture, and image theatre have the power to bridge our internal and external worlds, amplifying intention and presence in the practice of Theatre of the Oppressed (TO) – the people’s theatre. As founder Augusto Boal said, “Theatre is a form of knowledge; it should and can also be a means of transforming society. Theatre can help us build our future…” We will begin with a brief history and introduction to TO, and then ignite our imaginations, playing with the magical and the mundane, exploring a range of techniques using aesthetic space, games, image work, improvisation, movement, and storytelling.

A unique workshop converging theatre and collective action. This series focuses on an issue faced by many of our Colorado neighbors: the development of data centers near our communities. We will center environmental and social justice through theatre practices, somatic abolition and storytelling skills. In partnership with Womxn from the Mountain and GES Coalition, we will engage closely with local organizations committed to health and housing justice, and hear stories and lived experiences from folks directly impacted by the issue. Series culminates in an optional public activation.

Join Rachael and Theatre Artibus in exploring a range of Theatre of the Oppressed modalities: think games, exercises, and activities rooted in the practice of dialogue, storytelling, and improvisation. Through these engaging (and fun!) methods, we’ll dig into difficult topics and ignite our imaginations to disrupt harm and build community.

The Art of Dialogue: Restorative Conversations & Circles – August 1

Come out and practice the art of dialogue with Rachael K Sharp and Bianca Mikahn! How do we stay in a conversation when it gets heated? How do we broach difficult conversations, or decide if we need mediation? Conflict is inevitable, harm is not. This two part series will start by considering the origins of Restorative and Transformative Justice, and engaging with some foundational tools and practices for honest empathic communication.
